A Technical update from my side. Hope most of you guys know about this, lest it is another learning you may really want to have.
Google has always been a pioneer in giving out web services for free – It had been the case with orkut, gmail, and now more importantly the community sites in the lines of Sharepoint. Well, I am talking about Google Sites!. You might have seen how effective a Sharepoint web site could be, now you realise – it is easier to create one and also maintain one for your family, friends or classmates or colleagues and what not?
According to me, having worked on Sharepoint earlier – I would rate this a very good start to the features that might come in the future. According to me, it has scored and lost on these points.
- You need not install any software – God, that was terrible with MS installables. Worst of all, you never know why the installation fails.
- Though the look and the feel is not that fantastic – It still serves the purpose.
- You have an MS-Word kind of editor for creating the web pages – You can insert any form of the multimedia, Web 2.0 got to offer and you have the flexibility of putting all the Google’s features at a maximum usage level.
- Create dashboards to keep your self and your readers upto date about the events and happenings. You can have an almost iGoogle page, for the Google site page
- The announcements serves the same purpose as the WSS or MOSS has got to offer, though with a lesser scope compared to MOSS 2007. But still, the purpose is solved.
- The File cabinet is obviously, a wonderful thing if you are accustomed to use a group email service from email service providers which do not allow you to send attachments(with restrictions on size or whatever)
- You can have your own list of items – Again, the same as in normal WSS pages.

So what are you waiting for, create your own sites for free – Do No Evil though, Its google’s corporate funda – How nice it is and, apt it is right
